Moderated or not?

Just a little question: I've posted a few times since I joined earlier today, and some of my posts showed up immediately, while others returned a message that the post wouldn't be visible until it was approved by a moderator. Just curious about how this difference is determined. Thanks.

By a great big computer, one thats the size of three buildings, jet black and makes a humming noise like the monolith from the film 2001.

I think, I'm a bit hazy on the details.

Basically this website has less than the usual number of moderators, so we rely largely on the websites built-in spam detectors to keep the nigerians, the chinese and the indians from spamming it with adverts.

Adverts for things like cheap medicines (how anti-american is that? Cheap healthcare!! Hah!) advertisement for Viagra (this is a porn site, the erection should be achieved just looking at our galleries) and dick-enlargement therepy (according to the last poll, every male member of this site has a 9" cock apparently, so we don't need this sort of thing). We also have some royalty come to the site and make royal announcements. Let me quote you the last one;

"Hi, I'm Prince Jopo RumbaBem-be Numbas of the Kingdom of Liberia - actually a republic - and I have the sum of $20 millions dollars which I wish to transfer to blah blah blah."

To be honest, the detector is only right about a quarter of the time and once you've made about ten+ posts on the forum it gets less anal about you posting links. Sadly custom scripts specifically for porn sites don't exist, so when people start posting about cocks and sex, it tends to over-react and filter them. Its probably has a big list of blacklisted words, and if a new user uses more than a certain number of them, it moderates the post.

tl;dr There's a very clever detector which generates a lot of false-positives because the internet sucks.

Oh, I get it. So this site is run by that super-secret three-story-tall supercomputer named The Beast that's secretly located in the basement of the EU's administrative headquarters in Brussels, and is being used secretly by the NWO and the Illuminati to secretly run every aspect of our lives, including secretly keeping us occupied with porn and music on the Internet, so that we don't notice how those groups are secretly taking over everything. :eek: (Although in all honesty, I never quite figured out how, if they're so secret, how come we know so damned much what they're doing? Oh, well, it's probably just another one of their secrets). It figures that even the Illuminati would screw things up just like every other bureaucracy. Also, I didn't know that an energy-producing alien monolith is what powers The Beast, that explains how it can do so much crunching and nobody notices a power drain on the grid. So thanks for the information, it's just so comforting to know that somebody has got things under control, even if they're evil interdimensional reptioid aliens. :D

All joking aside, I understand how spam filters would give the kind of result that I got. I noticed that the two or three "moderated" posts did occur on threads about somewhat naughty subjects, so I did figure out that that had something to do with it. I'm not Chinese or Nigerian, but my ancestry is all Eastern European, and those people are up to their eyeballs in spam and phishing, too, so I'd better watch out for myself. :rolleyes: I've gotten the Nigerian prince emails myself, as well as requests to update my Ebay account (which I don't have) in French (which is not my native language). Gosh, the Internet is a fun place to play!

Anyway, thanks again for the info. I'm new here, so I'm still trying to figure out how to work this piece of apparatus, but I think I'm starting to get the hang of it.

as Rob states we use a moderation system, basically it stops bots posting spam which generally happens with spammers from post #1, which is why the moderation system wont affect you till you have met the required number of posts (tho l wont tell you how many posts that is :D youll find out when you arent getting moderated)

as for how the system works, its simple.. first part of the system blocks based on keywords and the second part of the system blocks links to other sites.. this allows us to check their content as spammers tend to implant malware in their sites, and once you have become a proper (not probationary) member and have the required amount of posts the system wont affect you any more.

Thanks again. I posted quite a bit in the last 24 hours, but if I read the rules right, you have to wait a week to get out of Level 1. That's actually a good thing, because at the rate I'm going right now, it'll take me that long to figure out all the details. :D

I don't mind the probationary status, and nothing I say is so important that it can't wait a few hours for others to read. On the other hand, that thing about being a "proper" member? Well, of course I'll be as well-behaved as I can, but I've never quite been able to get a handle on being proper. ;)

Well, I must be doing something right, it's less than 24 hours since I joined and already I'm a full member. :D Also, none of my posts have been moderated today, so I guess that means The Beast is accepting me as a full-fledged part of the Illuminati. Still, I feel like I'm not getting my share of the wealth and power, so I guess I have to participate even more.

I think server up date your account even so often after you reach a certain post requirements. it take to long for staff update each account by hand.
