Hyale continued to compress the boy's chest as his partner squeezed air into his lungs. Several long minutes passed and with no sign that the boy was going to come back. Things were beginning to seem hopeless and the neighbors soft sounds of sadness could be heard filtering into the back of the ambulance where they worked. Hyale shook his head and did the compressions a little faster. "Come on Seth! Breathe for me... breathe!" Hyale cried out and then there was a long beeping sound coming from the monitor before the boy suddenly convulsed and coughed up blood and soot from the fire.
Hyale's face lit up and he pulled the respirator away from the boy's face and wiped away the blood from his mouth. "Good, that's it..." he rejoiced as he shot his gaze up to his partner. "All right Zach, hop up front and get us to the hospital. I'll stay back here and stabilize him." The other medic nodded and closed the doors of the ambulance, before jumping into the driver's seat, initiating the lights and sirens and rushing them toward the hospital.
In the back, Hyale rummaged around the back of the ambulance and quickly placed an IV into the boy's hand and started him on liquids so he wouldn't become dehydrated. He then went through all the preliminary examinations. He listened almost helplessly to the boy's cries of pain and agony, but there was nothing he could do. He could not administer any kind of pain killer because he didn't know if the boy had any allergies. So instead, he took a soft blanket and covered the boy with it and sat down at the head of the gurney.
He leaned over the boy and placed a gentle hand to his forehead, brushing grimy, wet hair out of his face and stroked his hair in a comforting way as he gazed down at the boy, really taking him in. If the boy were to look up and see the man sitting above him, he would see a handsome man with softly angular features, a mess of black medium length hair and eyes of a striking, pale, golden hazel. He smiled down at the boy.
"You're doing great Seth, just hold on for me ok? We're almost to the hospital." Hyale pleaded softly.
