Heart strings (Private between Ink Dragon Rosette and myself)

They sing a song we do not always hear, a melody we sometimes choose to ignore, the strings of our hearts...

Reese Darenston, or Dr. Darenston here at work, was seated at the desk in his office, filling in sheets after sheets of client information. Despite the slow creep of a cramp in his hand and a crick in his neck, he plugged along, not wanting to stop until this was done. That is, until he was stalled at a document. It required information that he couldn't remember off the top of his head, and he couldn't seem to find the other paperwork containing it. He finally picked up his office phone and tried paging the receptionist. Key word; tried. No matter how long it wrang, no one picked up, to Reese's growing agitation. Finally, he put everything down, got up, and started for the reception.

As he strode through the halls, he felt the white lab coat he wore swishing back behind him. The material had slipped from his shoulders almost, only really held on by his arms. The result was a good look at the formal, light blue button up, no tie, that gently hugged his torso. Not tight, but certainly close fitted enough to reveal the health slope of his broad chest to his flat stomach. He was a weight loss doctor, he knew more about keeping the body visually healthy than most anyone out there. This also extended to his beige slacks, which closely fit his waist and hips, before widening gently as it trailed down his long legs. The same legs that were taking large, annoyed strides to the receptionist.

Upon arriving at his destination, he sighed, seeing the employee behind the counter speaking with a customer. By the batting eyelashes, and overly large smiles, he assumed that it was not something to intrude on. He understood that much. He reached up and pinched the bride of his nose, right above the bridge of his glasses. He could easily obtain contacts, but he liked his glasses. He thought his eyes were a cold shade of purple, and were off-putting to others. His glasses softened that, allowing the gentle lines of his face and caring smile to be noticed. THen again, this was all his opinion.

Lane was running a little late that day. His alarm clock had reset itself, during what was most likely a power outage, during the late hours of the night, when he was usually out like a light. So he had to get out of bed in a hurry, change in a hurry, and take off like a rocket, to get to work as soon as possible.
He knew the doctor woudn’t scold him, as he’d never been late before, but he just wouldn’t be able to live with himself, if he didn’t at least try to make up for the lost time. Fortunately for him, the bus arrived quickly, and encountered no traffic jams, so he;d only be ten minutes late. Hopefuly, the doc wouldn’t mind that.
Lane climbed the stairs to the clinic, and rushed to the changing room, to put on his uniform, but stopped, seeing his superior out on the hallway, near the receptionist’s desk. Whas he waiting for him?

Reese waited until the patient had left, before going to the receptionist desk and requesting the file he needed. They looked, and turned up empty. A facial muscle twitched in irritation. The receptionist said that there was a digital copy, and they'd send it to him right away. He agreeded, and politely asked them to also work to find that hard copy. As he turned from the desk, he spotted Lane coming in. He looked surprised, but not upset. He nodded a greeting, turning and heading back to his office. From what he knew of Lane, the other hadn't been late before, and hadn't really taken days off of work either. He figured that whatever had happened today wasn't a lapse in character, but one in circumstances. Understandable, so he saw no need to address it.

Lane felt relieved, and yet, a bit disappointed, by sensei's reaction. He'd hoped the man would at least be a tad bothered by his tardiness. True, it was the very first time, but still, it would make him feel like he actually meant something to the doctor. Like his presence was a necessary one. In stead, the man just waved a hello, only to turn around and head back to his office. Sense never did pay that much attention to him, no even when they were working. He just treated him like he did everybody else. They had a strictly formal accord.

But he wanted Reese to regard him as more than a simple assistant, he wanted their realtionship to change into something else. He’d secretely developed a crush, after working closely with that man, and he never found the courage to tell Reese about how he felt. Surely, sensei would be outraged, and request his dismissal, then he’d never get to see him again. He’d never get to look into those piercing amethyst eyes of his, he’d never have the chance to hear his voice, and that would kill him.
But there was nothing he could do for the time being, so he went to the wardrobe to change.

Reese did think a bit more about Lane than other co-workers, but his thoughts were simply that the other was a very helpful and devoted individual. Yes, he was curious about what had delayed the other today, but that was the other's own personal matter, he didn't feel he had any right to just ask about. Besides, the other wasn't even dressed yet when he'd seen him. There would be plenty of opportunities to question him, none of which were while he was making up his work for being late.

Reese continued back to his office, finding the digital copy of the form he'd been looking for, and continuing to fill out papers. It felt like three quarters of his time was filling out papers. But, they were necessary; they kept everything in order, proved that everything was legal, provided information easily. Yes, it was a very necessary task for him, he just much preferred when someone would come in and distract him though.

Lane quickly put on his uniform, making sure to use a hairband, for his long, dark locks. There was no more time to waste. Sensei was most likely buried in a pile of papers, and it was his duty to help him pull through that bureaucratic hell. He actually enjoyed the time they spent together, filling forms, as he'd occasionally get to hear Reese's manly, yet soft, soothing voice, as he sighed, when he got bored or annoyed.

Reese looked up as Lane entered, smilingly. "Good morning Lane, I trust every things is alright...?" he trailed off questioningly, giving the other the option of saying what had gone on or not. When he hadn't asked straight away, it was because he'd known that he'd spend quite a bit of time with the other. Currently, the doctor was at his desk, pen in hand as he filled things out, head having been titled forward slightly to write. He could feel an ache forming in his neck already.

Lane felt shivers running down his spine, at the sound of the doctor's voice. He was afraid he'd start blushing, and give himself away, so he looked at his uniform, straightening it out.
"Y... yes, of course, never better" he stuttered, walking up to his small desk, near the window. "I apologize for being late. Please, let me help you with these papers. It will go faster that way."

Reese wrote off the stuttering as being nervous that he'd be upset. Which is a reaction typical of most bosses, so Reese paid it no mind, Lane would figure out quite soon that there was no such feeling. He nodded as the other offered to help. "That would be much appreciated, go ahead, find a form and the other information. Oh, and, if I may inquire, exactly what caused you to be late?" he asked congenialy. It didn't show anger or other form of upset, just mild curiousity. In truth, Reese liked to hear a light background chatter as he worked, as much as he liked silence at times. It just that he hardly ever had a companion to speak with.
