Life Saving Love Making
The room was still, quiet but for the sound of a clock ticking somewhere and the eerie moan of blustery wind outside the window. It was a crisp, bitter-cold late Autumn evening and Hyale was rightfully buried under a mound of heavy blankets, sleeping soundly despite the gale outside. He was exhausted. It had been an unusually long and trying day; with four car accidents and several calls to the hospital for extra help, it was a wonder that the man had made it home at all today. He had been determined, though, that when he stepped through his apartment door that he was going to get some much needed sleep and told himself that even if the place caught fire he wouldn't get out of bed.
There was a large screeching sound and muffled urgent voices coming from his bedside table. The man groaned and squeezed his tired eyes closed a bit tighter before they drifted open and his hand blindly searched for the two-way radio he knew was somewhere near the edge of the table. Once he had it in his hand, he pulled it under the covers with him and turned up the volume. The radio was alive with transmission and he could hear the sound signal for a fire. Oh how he hoped he wasn't needed. They had told him to go get some rest and--
'9-1-1 Immediate response requested at 2223 Pine Ridge Rd, house fire reported, all ambulance and fire assistance required--' A female voice came over. 'All units please copy--'
"Damn it..." Hyale muttered and brought the receiver to his lips. "Unit 2-4 copies, what is the detailed situation?"
'Unit 2-4 Large blaze reported, people trapped in building--'
Hyale's brows knit. This was bad.
"Copy that - I am en route now."
It took the man only a minute to put on his gear and run out the door. He was on EMT duty before he left work so he had the ambulance with him. He was sure his partner would be on scene when he got there, so he flipped on the lights and siren and sped toward the place of the fire.

The blaze of the fire was growing large with each blow of the wind. Voices yelling, people screaming. They were all in a panicked. A few of the brave neighbors tries to help with keeping the fire from spreading to their homes and getting people out. While the rest remain to the side. Calling 9-1-1 to get some help there. For it was a home that was more of an apartment. Everyone who lived there came from all different background and different cities. Yet they were like family. They watched out for one another and helped out around the neighborhood.
The house itself was old and was power by gas. Stood at two stories and looked a little run down. That's why believe that this was started because of a gas leak. It was quiet, everyone was mostly likely asleep. Til there was a loud explosion and the ground shook a little. Next thing they knew, the streets were glowing bright red. Now everyone was mostly awake. Helping everyone out as much they could until the fire department and ambulance arrived.
By the time they showed up. part of the roof had collapses inside of the house. Glass was laying all over the yard that were starting to catch on fire due to the falling embers blown in the wind. They heard the sirens and saw the flashing lights coming up the street. The people that were helping from before stepped away. It was time for the trained professionals to take care of this. Firefighters got out from their engine and get to work fast. Hooking the hoses to the hydrant. Taking aim towards the house and start to spray water at it.
Just then a woman was starting to yell. "Seth! He's still inside!" she screamed in terror. That's when a big burst of flames came shooting out of the front door. Making the people jump and back away just in case. "Someone has to go in there and get him! If he's not here then he must be trapped! Where did see him last?!" a man in the crowd asked. "He's on the second roof. Where to roof collapse. Oh my god! He must be under the rubble!"
They would be right. For young Seth was in fact into the rubble He was standing right below it when it crumbled. A large beam was on top of him and was coughing up a storm. He couldn't breath. There was far to much smoke. Starting to think that he was about to go down like this. He had no strength to get himself out. He was covered head to toe in soot. Mixing in with some of his blood. Even some into his mouth. He was fading in and our fast. Trying to stay awake, but it was getting hard. "Maybe...if I just close my eyes for awhile." he said to himself.
What he tries to take a little nap, he was out cold. Looked like there was no hope for him.

As Hyale sped through the small suburb it did not take long for him to see just how bad the situation was. He still had several blocks to go before reaching the fire but he could already see thick, black clouds billowing above the treetops and into the cloudy night sky. Moments later he arrived at the scene and a foreboding chill ran down his spine at the frightening sight. The fire was far worse than he had imagined. Flames were licking most of the roof now and black smoke extruded from every possible orifice to the outside. There were dozens of people huddled and grouped outside the building and emergency personnel rushed to give aid to those injured and begin the process of putting a stop to the fire.
Hyale backed up to the curb, just as a second fire engine roared by and halted beside the first, his fellow volunteer firefighters quickly unraveling the hoses and getting them attached to the hydrant as well. Hyale jumped out of the bus and took a look around. He could feel the heat emanating from the burning building and the air was thick with toxic smoke, despite the wind. He was the first ambulance to arrive, so he grabbed his emergency bag and ran over to the people trying to get away from the building.
"I'm am EMT, is there anyone in need of assistance?" He inquired, but was caught off guard by the panic stricken woman who began to scream something about someone still being inside. Just then a back draft caused a huge burst of flames to fly out the front door causing Hyale and the rest of the people to flinch away from the blast.
Immediately straightening himself back out, he looked seriously to the crying woman. "Listen, I'm going to get your friend out of there. You take everyone and stand by the ambulance," he instructed calmly and set his bag on the ground. He then ran over to the first fire engine and the man in charge. "John, there's still someone in there, on the second floor," he told the man. "The woman said his apartment is just below where the roof has collapsed."
John, the fire chief, gazed at the blazing building with wide and contemplative eyes. "Shit..." he swore. "Well, we have to do something."
"The flames seem to be the most concentrated on the main floor now, if you can keep a steady spray toward the collapse, I think I can go in and find him."
"Hyale are you crazy? The floors will be totally compromised, it could collapse. We can't afford to put you in danger too."
"I can't just stand here arguing with you John. It could already be too late! Let me go," he pleaded, eyes desperate. The thought of losing someone because they couldn't act quickly enough was terrifying.
The fire chief shook his head and clenched his eyes closed. But with a growl, the man nodded and threw Hyale a respirator and a fire suit. "Fine, just hurry!"
Within seconds Hyale was suited up and had his respirator running as he circled around the back of the house. It seemed the flames hadn't gotten that far yet. He kicked in the door and made his way carefully toward the front of the house, where the stairway was. However, as soon as he went through the threshold the scenery changed dramatically. It was as if he had stepped into Hell itself. Everything was glowing red and orange as water and debris dripped and flooded from the ceiling. For a moment Hyale was paralyzed in place, unable to move, but he snapped out of it and made a dash for the stairs.
He could hear the harsh hum and spatter of the water hitting the outside of the house and raining down onto the roof from above. He made his way up the stairs and began to call out to the trapped person. "Seth! Seth can you hear me?" When there was no response, Hyale made his way toward the area of the collapse. It was still terribly hot up here and he could hardly see through the thick smoke, but suddenly from beneath a large broken beam and plate of drywall he spotted a leg.
The man pushed his way through the rest of the debris and heaved the large beam away from the body there. "Seth!" He called out, but there was no response from the man. "Shit..." he muttered to himself. Just then another large flaming bit of the roof collapsed, sending down chunks of flame dripping shingles and drywall on top of them. Hyale dove down to shield the young man. Outside, the screams of women and yells from his comrades could be heard.
Pushing away the rubble from his back and around him, he wedged his hands beneath the boy and picked him up into his arms, holding him tightly against his chest as he turned and made his way out. The flames had now taken most of the staircase, but there was no other way. He couldn't jump out any of the windows because the drop was too far and he knew they didn't have the right equipment for that kind of escape. With a deep breath, he hurried down the stairs only to have them buckle beneath his and the boy's combined weight. He stumbled over the banister and fell about 4 feet, hitting the wall. He let out a gasp and a groan as he steadied himself.
He took a few quick breaths and looked down to check on the boy, before running out the fortunately sparsely burning back of the house. He ran out of the house and across the yard toward his ambulance where his partner joined him. "Help me get him into the bus!" Hyale ordered as he ripped the fire gear off of himself and jumped into the back of the ambulance. The secondary EMT was there and checking his vitals when Hyale made it to the boy's side.
"He's not breathing and there is no pulse," the partner said.
"I'm going to commence CPR," Hyale said as he pressed the manual respirator over the boy's mouth and nose. He began to force air down into the boy's lungs. When that alone created no improvement, he handed the respirator to his partner and began to pump the boy's chest.
"Come on kid... breathe..." Hyale urged shakily.

As the people worried outside of the burning building. The young lad felt the world around him getting darker. Like everything was getting away from him. A part of him was saying that it was okay and it's time to let go. While another part of him was saying to hold on. That someone will come to get him. It was hard to choose just who to listen. He was feeling tired. Then something screamed and he opened his eyes, but only a little ways. That's when he felt something else. It was cool and wet. "How can it be raining, inside of a building? The hole...it must be the hole in the roof. It feel nice." he said to himself in his head. Closing his eyes once more. Having to clue that what he was feeling was the water coming from the hose, spraying. To die down the flames. Again he fades out to reality, but was now in a dream.
In the dream. Seth was all alone. In a long white hall way. With many doors on each side. Looking like it would never end. The photos on the wall had people on a blank background and no faces. There was no color on them either. Just an outer line. Like the flowers on the table. As he was making his way down the hall that seemed to go on forever. He hears a fade some. "Seth!" a voice called out. Yet he was not familiar with it. "Yes? Hello?" call calls out to it. Trying to open the doors around him.
One by one none of them would budge. No matter how hard he tries to jiggle with the handle or kick. They wouldn't move. Until one finally did, but there was nothing. Just a burst of heat. Making him take a few steps back. Running down the halls, making a turn. He tries to open another on. This time two arms came after him. He tries to run, but his legs couldn't move. So the arms grabbed him by the arms and he was lifted away. into the room. The door shutting as he enters.
The room was all black. He couldn't see a thing, but he could feel that he was floating. Feeling a warmth. It was like before. This was different. Then he heart something. It was some short of beat it was fast. It reminded him of a heart. "Hello is anyone there? Tell me how I get out of here or where I am?" he asks. But doesn't get anything. All of a sudden, the room starts to shake. "What the?!" he loos around, but sees nothing. Next thing he knew, the young lad was falling. Letting out a scream of terror.
Thinking that was the end of it. he felt a gentle breeze again his face and was laying on something soft and warm. It was rather relaxing. That when he heard the voice again. "You did good. You deserve some rest." it said. Not seeing anyone. "Who are you? Where am I?" Seth asked the stranger. "I am no one, yet someone. But it does not matter. Aren't you tired. It's time for sleep." the voice said. He was starting to agree with it and shut his eyes. So he heard nothing. His mind has shut off.
In the world of the living. People watched as Hyale brought out the last person in the building. Just as they escape. The whole thing collapsed. Making people scream and cry. For many people had lost their home this night. But that only last for a second. As they turn their attention back to the fire fighter and lad. Wondering if he was still alive. Some people heard that he wasn't breathing and with no pulse. Gasped could be heard and more crying. Some even lowered their heads. Thinking that it was all over.
"Wait!" another voice screamed in Seth's head. Making him snapp back into dream. Which he felt pressure in his chest. Then the voice that was calling out to him before. ""Come on kid... breathe..."
What seemed like hop in the real word. The young lad coughed and quite loudly. Spitting out some of the soot, along with blood. "He's alive!" one of the medics yelled. "But we need to get him to the hospital and stat!" the medic said. Even though his eyes would not open. Seth was wheezing and coughing. Letting out grunts and hisses of pain in between. For he was in fact in a lot of pain. It was like he was laying on a piece of metal that was over a hot flame. Having no clue as to what was going on. "Pa-Pa-Pain." he whispered on his breath.

Hyale continued to compress the boy's chest as his partner squeezed air into his lungs. Several long minutes passed and with no sign that the boy was going to come back. Things were beginning to seem hopeless and the neighbors soft sounds of sadness could be heard filtering into the back of the ambulance where they worked. Hyale shook his head and did the compressions a little faster. "Come on Seth! Breathe for me... breathe!" Hyale cried out and then there was a long beeping sound coming from the monitor before the boy suddenly convulsed and coughed up blood and soot from the fire.
Hyale's face lit up and he pulled the respirator away from the boy's face and wiped away the blood from his mouth. "Good, that's it..." he rejoiced as he shot his gaze up to his partner. "All right Zach, hop up front and get us to the hospital. I'll stay back here and stabilize him." The other medic nodded and closed the doors of the ambulance, before jumping into the driver's seat, initiating the lights and sirens and rushing them toward the hospital.
In the back, Hyale rummaged around the back of the ambulance and quickly placed an IV into the boy's hand and started him on liquids so he wouldn't become dehydrated. He then went through all the preliminary examinations. He listened almost helplessly to the boy's cries of pain and agony, but there was nothing he could do. He could not administer any kind of pain killer because he didn't know if the boy had any allergies. So instead, he took a soft blanket and covered the boy with it and sat down at the head of the gurney.
He leaned over the boy and placed a gentle hand to his forehead, brushing grimy, wet hair out of his face and stroked his hair in a comforting way as he gazed down at the boy, really taking him in. If the boy were to look up and see the man sitting above him, he would see a handsome man with softly angular features, a mess of black medium length hair and eyes of a striking, pale, golden hazel. He smiled down at the boy.
"You're doing great Seth, just hold on for me ok? We're almost to the hospital." Hyale pleaded softly.

As they watch their friend and neighbor being drove away to the hospital. They prayed that he will pull through and come safely back to them. The looked at the remains of their home. Which the fire was starting to die down and getting under control. Luckily for them. Since they lived in a really nice neighborhood. Most of the others offered then to stay at their places for the night. That's what was great about this small town. Everybody was friendly and seemed they knew one another. They watched the firefighters take care of the rest of the flames until only the burnt remains were left.
Meanwhile in the ambulance. Seth continued to wheeze and groan in pain. It felt bruised, a few bones broken and some parts were third degree burns. He was trying his best to breath through it, but it was quite difficult. With each bump they hit on the road let out a louder howl of pain. Wishing he could go back to the darkness. So he doesn't have to deal with the pain. Then he feels something covering his body. He was feeling a little chilly after getting wet from the water.
As Hyale ran his hand through his hair. He can see that some of the soot that covered his body was washed off from the water. Exposing his pale skin with a hint of burned areas. Also showing a bit of his platinum blond hair, but he was still pretty covered up by soot. But feeling this was calming him down. Opening his eyes a little. Just enough to show the other his eyes. Which were a little different then normal. For the left eye was blue but it was so pale, like alice blue. While the right was white both the iris and pupil. For his vision was very poor. He can only make out the shape of his savoir.
Hearing him say that there almost there. He grunts and wheezed. "Pa-Pa-Pain." he said speaking a little louder. Sounding like he was on the verge of tears. He he wasn't so dehydrated.

The ride to the hospital was relatively short, only minutes, but each was a pressing challenge for the injured boy who constantly moaned in pain and shivered with cold. It was all Hyale could do to keep him warm and as comfortable as possible. At one point he caught the boy's eyes and wondered whether or not the white eye was an injury caused by the fire and if the physicians at the hospital could do anything about it. The outlook for that matter seemed grim, eye injuries often resulted in some sort of permanent damage that worsened or destroyed the sight in that eye all together.
He continued to watch over and monitor the boy, stroke his hair and mutter encouraging and comforting words until the ambulance finally came to a halt outside the Emergency Room at the hospital. "I know you're in pain Seth, but hang in there. We're at the hospital and the doctors are going to take good care of you. Just hold on," he spoke quickly, just as the back doors opened and a crowd of nurses and doctors helped to usher the boy out on the gurney and inside to an examination room.
"What is his status?" One doctor ordered as Hyale followed the group inside.
"He was caught under a collapse at a house fire. He has suffered severe smoke inhalation, has incurred several burns of varying degrees and I suspect he has several broken bones. He is only barely stable, his heart rate is irregular and his blood pressure low," Hyale reported, then giving the doctors the exact numbers from his examination.
Once he was finished with his report, Hyale was forced away from the examination room and the boy. He did his best to stay as long as possible. He was sure the boy would be frightened, but at this point his job was done. The boy's fate now rested in the competent hands of the hospital's doctors and nurses.
With a resigned sigh, Hyale made his way back out to the ambulance, running a hand through his matted mess of wet, grimy, smoke scented hair. Sitting into a slouch on the back bumper of the bus, the dark haired EMT bent over and rested his face in his hands. His heart was beating like crazy, the adrenaline in his system still not ready to settle down. He couldn't help but remember the boy's pale eyes and the look of pain on his face. He really hoped, he wasn't too late...
There was a hand on his shoulder. Hyale sat up to meet the eyes of his partner. "Hey, man, you should go home. You look like a wreck," Zach said, an expression of lighthearted concern on his face.
Hyale gave the man a weak smile. "Thanks Zach, but I want to stay and see if the boy is all right."
Zach gave him a stern look. "No can do bud. You need sleep. You've already saved enough people today. Leave some of the glory for the rest of us, eh?" The man laughed. "I already called a cab for you... and I'll give you a call when I hear about the condition of the boy."
Hyale gazed up at his partner appreciatively, affording him another half smile. "Thanks Zach."
"What are partners for?" He replied and waved back to Hyale as he headed back into the hospital.
Just then the cab arrived.

To him the world was a blur. There was no noises he can hear. From the siren to the tires hitting the road. The only thing he can hear was the medic's voice. Telling him that it was going to be alright. But was it? Was he really going to be okay. As he laid there. He was thinking of his home. All the people that lived in the same building. They might of started out as strangers, but after the years. They were his family. To think of loosing any of them was heart breaking. Since everything felt like it was moving fast, he didn't know where the others were. Making tears roll down his face. There he closed his eyes. No longer having the strength to keep then open.
Yet he can feel the ambulance coming to a halt and then pulling him out. Wheeling him in the room. He couldn't quite hear as to what they were saying. All he can hear was Hyale's words buzzing in his head like a raging yellow jacket. But it was his voice that was calming him down. Even though he didn't had a good look at him. His voice was so smoothing. He told himself that he will pull through. For he wanted to hear that voice again and to thank him to. For saving his life.
After taking a good look at Seth. They found out through X-rays. That not only was his lungs filled with smoke. But three of his rib bones and left leg were broken. His spline also burst and there was a tear in the lung from one of the rib cage bone poking at it. Not to mention all the burns. The cried in pain and muffled that it felt like someone dumped acid on his poor body. Of course he didn't say that. He was in to much pain to speak clearly. After reading his records. They found out that he was okay with drugs and rolled him out to the E.R.
They cleaned out his lungs, removed his busted spline, put some wires through his broken bones, and removes the infected burn skin that would cause problems in the future if they were not removed. Knowing that he was going to be in to much pain they thought it would be in to much pain. They decided to put in a drug induced. The surgery mostly took all night to do. Once they were finished and stitched him up. They wheeled him in the ICU. A room all to himself. Hooked up to the heart monitor, had I.V bags hooked into him. With drugs that will keep him stable while in the coma and help with the pain.
With bandages wrapped around half of his face, head, chest, and right foot. Then a cast on his left leg. Starting from the knee to his foot. He was all cleaned up and wearing the gown that the hospital provides to their patients. However, with him being washed. You can see that his skin was heavily burned. Covered in blisters. Leaking out fluids and looked just nasty. But Seth didn't care. It was far out of it to notice. He was in a dreamless slumber.
By morning, it was all over the news as to what happened. That no one was killed, but one was seriously hurt. Talking to the people who lived it the building and lived. As they talked about just how scared they were. They were also worried about their friend. They wanted to see him. But the police kept them busy by asking question as to how this all happen. All of them said the same thing. That it was cost by a gas leak in the kitchen. They also give a shout out to the person that saved their friend's life, Hyale.

The kindness and support from the community and the patient's neighbors was tremendous and Hyale was very grateful for their kindness toward him in the days after the fire. He went back to work after a few days off, which his boss had forced him to take, and after his shift every day he would go to the hospital and visit the boy he saved. It was a compulsion, he couldn't help but want to check up on his condition. At first Hyale was horrified by the amount of damage the boy had taken from the fire. It looked far worse now that all of the soot and dirt had been cleaned away. It was a mercy that they put him into a coma until he healed at least a little bit. The pain he would have felt if left awake would have been unbearable for anyone, let alone this poor boy.
He kept up this routine for weeks it seemed, checking in on the boy, making sure that he was stable and doing well. There had been several scares over that time, but it seemed that the patient was going to be all right. Hyale had become such a frequent visitor that all the nurses now knew him by name and he theirs. He would spend a few hours after each shift, talking to and comforting the boy as he lay asleep or just sitting by his bedside, watching him. He felt a responsibility toward this boy, as if it was his duty to make sure he made it through until the very end, even if his real involvement with the boy should have been over the moment he left the ambulance that fateful night.
That, and he wanted to see those strange eyes of his again.

Time pass on by, but to the drug induce coma young lad. It was like time stood still. Not aware as to what was going on around his world. Having no clue that all the people he lived with would come and visit him. Bringing him flowers, talking to him while he laid in the hospital bed. Some of them would leave in tears because of how bad of a shape he was in after the fire. They made out fine, with maybe a few cuts and light burnt marks, but nothing that a short time would heal. Yet there's Seth. Looking so frail and helpless. Soon they short of stopped seeing him. Because they couldn't stand to see him like this. At least they were glad to know that the coma was controlled by doctor and didn't slip into one.
Hours turned into days, days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months. Yet he still lays there in the bed, but he was slowly healing up nicely. He had to get a few stitches and doctors said that some of the burns will scar. But the bandages came off and were replace with small band-aids on some places. Mostly on his cheeks and hands. But while he was still in the sleep like state. Each time Hyale would talk to him. It was like he could hear him. His index finger would slightly twitch or the side of his mouth would curl up. Like he was trying to smile.
It's been two months since the fire had happen. The flowers that were one given to him. Where thrown away because they all wilted away. No one other then his savoir came to see him. His doctor decided that he was healed enough to be finally off of the coma drugs. That he would awake soon. Yet he didn't start to stir until late one night. When he heard a familiar voice outside of his room. His eyes slightly opened and groaned. For even though he was not he serious pain like before. He was still sore and a little sluggish from being in a coma so long.
Seth heard the beeping of the machines and the chatting of nurses and the male voice he remember. It was the same one that he remember hearing while he was under. As his eyes wonder around the room. All he can see was the brightness on the lights and the whiteness of the hospital room. At first he wonder where he was, but then remember the fire. Making him gasped and sat up quickly. Unplugging the heart monitor which made the loud ringing noise when someone's line went flat. Making the nurses panic and go rushing into the room.
But to him, it looked like blue blobs were coming after him. Seeing the blue of the nurse's scrubs. Then tried to pinn him to the bed and plug the heart monitor and put it back on him. Asking him to calm down, but he kept going on about the fire and wondered what happen to everyone. Darting his strange color eyes all over the place.
